Aleix Cansell playing a grand piano outdoors, with fields and hills in the background

Aleix Cansell is a Catalan pianist and composer with roots in the Empordà region. His approach to jazz and contemporary music centres on accompaniment and improvisation.

He began his musical education at the Escola de Música de Torroella de Montgrí before completing a degree in jazz piano at Taller de Músics, studying with Xavi Torres and Joan Monné, among others. He went on to complete the BCN Jazz Master at ESMUC with Lluís Vidal.

His work with Acció, Sara Terraza, Trio R4, Rosa Pou, Cascai Teatre and Ciutat has taken him across jazz, soul, pop and electronic music, as well as poetry and theatre.

He has regularly taken part in initiatives including iCat FM’s El Desconcert and the Talents Jazz series at La Pedrera, and has been selected for artistic residencies with Salvador Sobral, Perico Sambeat and Santi de la Rubia.

Alongside his work with other artists, he released Negligible with Héctor Tejedo on double bass and Oriol Roca on drums. Through his own writing and arrangements, the record explores an intimate, minimalist sound in the tradition of European jazz. Its influences range from Keith Jarrett and Carla Bley to Bobo Stenson and Richie Beirach.
